About the Cottage Camp Project:
The Smith Eslick Cottage Camp has been recognized as a unique example of an early automobile tourist accommodation and as a wonderful example of rustic architecture.
Located at 729 Lake Avenue on the northwest corner where Lake Avenue intersects Vine Street in Grand Lake, Colorado, the Cottage Camp is believed to be the oldest original condition early Mountain Rustic motel in the United States. Lake Avenue is known as the ‘old road’ which was originally the main thoroughfare into the Town of Grand Lake prior to the creation of Shadow Mountain Lake. The Smith Eslick Cottage Court is the primary structure on the property. Built by Preston H. Smith, Clyde Eslick, and Alfred Eslick, the Cottage Court is listed on the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties. The building features bark-on halfround, lodgepole pine siding locally referred to as a ‘barkie’. The Smith Eslick Cottage Court, constructed in 1915, was built around the same time as the opening of the Rocky Mountain National Park and the development of more and better roads in the area. Many other early auto camp buildings have been modified or demolished, making the Smith Eslick Cottage Court an especially significant resource. The Grand Lake Area Historical Society (GLAHS) aims to re-open the Cottage Camp, including the Smith Eslick Cottage Court as an interpretive museum, in the summer of 2015 to coincide with the celebration of Rocky Mountain National Park’s Centennial Anniversary.
